Who We Are

The Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) is an independent, nonprofit certification board that cultivates the highest professional and ethical standards for sleep health professionals by providing the leading internationally recognized credential in sleep technology – the Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) credential. Since the first credentialing exam administration in 1979, the BRPT has credentialed over 22,000 RPSGTs in the United States, Canada, and 32 countries overseas.

The RPSGT credential is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) confirming it complies with NCCA’s stringent standards for a professional certification program. Accreditation validates the integrity of the RPSGT program and is a mark of quality. Every five years, the BRPT must apply to have the credential reaccredited; in September 2017 the RPSGT credential received its accreditation for the next 5 years.

In 2010, the BRPT introduced an entry-level certificate exam, the Certified Polysomnographic Technician (CPSGT) for individuals new to sleep. In 2014, the BRPT launched the Certification In Clinical Sleep Health (CCSH) exam, an advanced credentialing examination for healthcare providers who work directly with sleep medicine patients, families and practitioners to coordinate and manage patient care, improve outcomes, educate patients and the community, and advocate for the importance of good sleep.

In addition to administering the CPSGT, RPSGT and CCSH exams in the United States and internationally, the BRPT also maintains a registry of active BRPT credential holders.

The BRPT also provides its Continuing Sleep Technology Education (CSTE) Program for educational providers seeking continuing education credits for their offerings. In addition, the BRPT offers its Sleep Technology Approved Resource (STAR) Program. STAR designation is reserved for education programs that do not have CAAHEP or CoARC accreditation. Designation as a STAR provider is granted solely for the purpose of establishing candidate eligibility for the BRPT exams.

The BRPT is led by an active, engaged volunteer Board of Directors comprised of experts in the field of polysomnography and includes at least one “public” member representing the interests of the consumer / patient community. The Board is international in scope and blends the expertise of technologists and physicians to establish and maintain credentialing guidelines for clinical sleep health professionals.

The BRPT Executive Office is based in Arlington, VA and includes a Chief Executive Officer, Credentialing Director, Credentialing Coordinator, Program Administrator and Credentialing Assistant. The RPSGT, CPSGT and CCSH exams are developed by teams of experienced item writers / Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) under the direction of an Exam Development Committee (EDC). Exam form development, psychometric services and test delivery are managed through Pearson VUE, headquartered in Minneapolis, MN.
