Reno Symposium A Great Success
With more than 300 attendees and exhibitors, the BRPT's 6th Annual Symposium in Reno, Nevada last month was a tremendous success. Speakers covered an array of topics ranging from sleep forensics and courts of law, to establishing best practice standards for sleep disordered breathing, to a vigorous discussion of the pros and cons of daytime versus nighttime scoring. The audience weighed in on the scoring debate through a poll conducted on site. Many reported that some level of scoring of the study by the recording technologist was being done at night, but a large majority of respondents indicated that studies were being scored or overscored by another technologist with a fresh set of eyes before the scoreset was final.

Question Participant Category Percent of “Yes” Responses
Should recording techs complete the final scoreset at night? Managers 10%
Should recording techs complete the final scoreset at night? Technologists 10%
Should there be dedicated time for techs to score during the day or outside of the recording session? Managers 35%
Should there be dedicated time for techs to score during the day or outside of the recording session? Technologists 45%

One attendee summed up her thoughts on the meeting this way, "Love the Symposium and the CSE course. After being in sleep for so long and going to national and regional conferences it was fantastic to have new topics and speakers." (Click Here to see Photos)

Save the Date for the 2013 Symposium in Louisville, Kentucky September 12-14.
A Clinical Sleep Educator Program is also being planned in conjunction with the Symposium on September 11th. Prior to that, a CSE program will be offered on May 8th in Nashville, TN in conjunction with the FOCUS conference.

Sleep Technologist Appreciation Week October 1-7
In honor of Sleep Technologist Appreciation Week, BRPT offered a free webinar – produced by Sleep Health Management Resources – entitled Sleep Health Taking a BITE out of OSA with Oral Appliance Therapy. Participants enjoyed the topics and offered the following comments: "This will help me in my job since many patients are opting for dental appliances. Additionally, I have never done a PSG with the dental appliance." "Very informative topic!" "This was a very good and comprehensive coverage of the proper usage of various dental devices to help treat OSA patients."

BRPT also offered daily "give aways" during the week. We randomly selected from our database of credential holders, one RPSGT and one CPSGT each day of the week, with "grand prize winners" selected on the final day of the week. The winners were announced last week. Congratulations to all of the winners of this year's Sleep Tech Appreciation Week Giveaways!

Keep An Eye Out For The JTA Survey
Watch your inboxes for a Job Task Analysis (JTA) survey coming soon! Please help us get an accurate picture of our profession by completing the JTA survey when it comes to you. Those of you who complete the survey will be eligible to win a $500 Apple gift card.

The survey will ask technologists to rank a wide range of tasks with regard to frequency and importance. The survey results are then compiled and analyzed by Pearson VUE psychometricians and reviewed by the JTA Expert Panel.

Based on the survey results, the RPSGT and CPSGT exams will be built against new exam blueprints. The JTA process ensures BRPT is offering exams with content developed against accepted methodology and best credentialing practices.
