Maintaining your RPSGT (Registered Polysomnographic Technologist), or CCSH (Certification in Clinical Sleep Health) credential is essential for career growth and professionalism in sleep technology. Further, it demonstrates a sleep tech’s mastery of key job competencies and is maintained through continuing education. BRPT offers a structured process for recertification by CECs, ensuring that credentialed technologists stay current with industry standards and practices.
Getting Started: Navigating the BRPT Portal
To begin your recertification journey, log in to your BRPT account. Access the “Applications” tab and select either “RPSGT Recertification by CEs”, or “CCSH Recertification by CEs” from the dropdown menu. This launches the application, allowing you to view/enter your CECs and upload other necessary documents.
Creating Your Application
Click on “Create New Application.” Review the available recertification options and proceed by clicking “Next.” The BRPT system tracks your credential status and will activate your eligibility for recertification when you are within 180 days of your expiration date. At this stage, several pathways may be available depending on your status:
- If your credential is six months or less from expiring and you plan to submit 50 CECs, you do not have to retake the exam.
- If your credential is expired by 1–90 days, you can recertify with CECs; extension of credits fee may be added but no exam required.
- If your credential is expired for more than 90 days but less than one year, exam required, no CECs needed.
- If you wish to recertify solely by retaking and passing the exam, you may do so without submitting CECs.
- If your credential is expired for over one year but less than five years, both exam and CECs are required.
Entering Continuing Education Activities
Add each CEC activity individually. Do not combine credits into a single entry except for ISR credits. Enter course names, providers, dates (in MMDDYYYY format), and credit amounts. Upload copies of certificates for each entry. Eligible activities include formal courses, conferences, and qualifying meetings recognized by BRPT.
Submitting BLS/CPR Verification
Provide details and documentation for your Basic Life Saving and CPR (BLS/CPR) training. This involves uploading your certificate and entering its expiration date in the required format. Both in-person and online training are accepted, subject to BRPT guidelines.
Background Check Process
Each applicant must complete a background questionnaire covering criminal convictions, litigations, licensing issues, or complaints against professional conduct. If answering “Yes” to any item, a detailed narrative and supporting documentation must be submitted for each incident. The application is only rejected if required documentation is not provided or obligations aren’t fulfilled. European Union applicants should ensure compliance with local GDPR restrictions.
Attesting to Standards of Conduct
Next, you need to read and digitally sign the BRPT Standards of Conduct. This step certifies that all information provided is accurate and that you agree to audits for verification purposes. Failure to comply can result in disciplinary action, including rejection or revocation of certification.
Final Review and Payment
Ensure all sections have been completed—credit activities, BLS/CPR, background check, and standards of conduct. Click on “Checkout” to pay the applicable recertification fee. Credit card and check payments are accepted. Expect an additional fee if any CECs are earned after your credential expiration. Once payment is submitted, your application enters BRPT staff review. Standard review takes about 15 business days; expedited review is available for an added rush fee, guaranteeing review within 1–3 business days (though not guaranteed finalization in that timeframe).
Confirmation and Timeline
After submission, you will receive confirmation. The BRPT will contact you if any further information or documentation is needed. If requirements are met, your recertification will be processed and you’ll continue to hold active status as an RPSGT or CCSH.
Tips for Hassle-Free Recertification
- Track CECs throughout the five-year window and upload documents as soon as credits are earned.
- Double-check the eligibility window and recertification pathway best suited for your situation.
- Separate each activity entry and documentation clearly; don’t bulk upload unless credited as ISR.
- Maintain up-to-date records of BLS/CPR training and renew well before expiration.
- Thoroughly address any background questions and supply all supporting documents.
- Review the Standards of Conduct carefully and understand the implications of non-compliance.
- Plan for fees and, if timing is short, budget for expedited review if necessary.
- Submit your application at least 2 months in advance.
A Final Reminder
Please be sure to carefully review the BRPT’s Recertification Standards to ensure you are up to date with our renewal policies and procedures prior to submitting your application. You will find critical and valuable information there to ensure a successful recertification. For example, the BRPT only accepts continuing education credits that are directly sleep focused for certification renewal. Credits from life support courses or topics that are not directly sleep-focused are not accepted. Duplicate or reused coursework, as well as credits from retaking STAR programs after credentialing, are not allowed.
Bringing together professional development, compliance, and career continuity, the BRPT’s recertification process by continuing education credits is designed to keep technologists at the forefront of sleep health. Keep this guide handy and manage each step proactively to enjoy seamless recertification and ongoing professional growth.
